How to HOLD and RESTRAIN a Chinchilla
All you have to do is pick it up carefully and gently, using both hands as a scoop, and make sure it does not squirm loose or fall. Cuddling it is that simple!
To pick up a kit properly, cup both of your hands together and scoop the baby up under the rump and into the palms of your hands Close your hands firmly, but not tightly, around the baby. You can also hold the kit with on hand, with your thurm and fingers gently grasping it around the belly, Be very careful not to hold or squeeze too tightly around the chest because you can accidentally damage the fragile tissues of the lungs. Hold you pet close against your chest with both hands to prevent it from falling.
An adult chinchila can be held or restrained by holding the base of the tail (the part closest to the animal's body) and allowing the animal to rest its body on your forearm. Always hold onto the tail in case your pet is suddenly startled or decides to jump. You can also lift your pet up by the base of its tail to move or reposition it quickly. always hold on to the base of the tail only and never grab the tip of the tail. Holding , grabbing, or grasping a chinchilla by the tip of the tail can cause the tail to break or come off!
Pregnant chinchillas must be lifted and held gently, with extreme care not to squeeze or crush the belly. Ideally the mother-to-be should be picked up by cupping two hands to support the extraheavy body and prevent struggling. Never press on the abdomen or chest. Be gentle!
If your pet squirms and is difficult to hold, talk to it in a calm, soothing voice until it stops wriggling. One way to calm your pet is to offer it a small treat.
